Lawn in autumn

A beautiful lawn starts with healthy grass, and healthy grass starts with high quality grass seed. SavATree uses our own premium seed blends developed through university partners to be genetically more resistant to insects and disease. And our advanced seeding techniques and specialized machinery help our quality seed flourish where it’s planted.

SavATree lawn specialists will evaluate the current conditions of your lawn, learn what’s important to you in the enjoyment of your property, and recommend a seeding program customized for your needs.

Not All Grass Seed is Created Equal

SavATree’s premium grass seed blends include the top-rated varieties from the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP).) NTEP is a widely-respected research program that tests turfgrass species in forty U.S. states and six Canadian provinces. Our blends, which include mostly Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass and Tall Fescue varieties, are some of the most disease-resistant (especially against Dollar Spot, Red Thread, Leaf Spot, and Patch diseases); pest-resistant (such as endophyte-enhanced varieties that repel sucking and chewing insects like Chinch bugs); and drought-tolerant available. The grass varieties included in our premium blends were also chosen for their strong aesthetic qualities, such as dense turf, with good color, that greens up early in the spring. Lawn Seeding Considerations

Some of the most common questions we get about seeding from clients are:

  • When is the ideal time for lawn seeding?
  • How long does grass seed take to germinate?
  • What are the specific maintenance requirements following lawn seeding?

The short answer for each of them? It depends on your property conditions.

A lawn care professional can guide you through all of these variables and provide tips to help restore your existing lawn or establish a new lawn.

Our lawn care team will perform a soil analysis, select the best seed for your landscape conditions and develop a comprehensive lawn care maintenance plan customized for your property’s needs. We also have optional natural lawn care programs available to fit your preferences.

Select the Best Seed for Your Property and Soil Conditions

Whether you’re looking to fill in bare spots, or establish a new lawn, the key to success is to choose high-quality grass seed, and seeding methods, that are well-matched to your soil and property conditions. Sandy soil? Lots of shade, or sun? Wet, poorly-drained areas? The presence of weeds or insects?

The ability of your turfgrass to thrive depends on the condition of the soil it grows in. So as a first step in creating an optimal seeding plan, your SavATree arborist will perform a professional laboratory analysis of soil samples from your property to reveal nutrient content, the percentage of organic matter present, pH levels, soil compaction, and other characteristics. Combined with a careful visual inspection of your property, this information will help them identify the most appropriate seed varieties, and seeding methods, for your lawn. Use the Best Seeding Methods for Your Property

The Benefits of Overseeding

Overseeding an existing lawn with new seed varieties is one of the most effective ways to improve the quality of your lawn. Aging grass does not produce new stems or tillers as rapidly as young grass. And lawn installed years ago can’t compare with the benefits of today’s improved grass seed, which adapts better to changing landscape . Overseeding with SavATree’s premium seed blends will help protect your lawn from drought, disease, pests, excessive traffic, and shade.

Core Aeration with Overseeding: a Win-Win Combination

Core aeration is the process of mechanically removing plugs of soil and thatch from a lawn in order to help improve water, air and nutrient movement in the soil. Overseeding uses a spreader to distribute new grass seed over an existing lawn. Combining core aeration with overseeding – that is, dropping the seed into the core holes and soil created by the aeration treatment – greatly increases the opportunities for the seeds to germinate. This combination of techniques is an ideal way to introduce better grass varieties into the lawn, reduce soil compaction, minimize thatch buildup, and build a greener, healthier lawn. Slice Seeding

Slice seeding is an ideal technique for repairing a damaged lawn, improving a thin or weak lawn, or introducing more resistant grass types that are better suited to the various conditions of your property. This efficient method involves specialized equipment that uses steel blades to cut furrows into the soil and then plants grass seed directly into those furrows. Because slice seeding places seeds in direct contact with the soil (as opposed to merely spreading them onto a lawn), the seeds will have a much better chance to germinate.
